Thoughts on Dependence
I've been thinking a lot about dependence vs. independence lately. The more I think about it, the more I realize that none of us is really, truly independent. Too many people spend their lives working to free themselves from all forms of dependency. But in the end, they are still dependent upon telling themselves that they are independent. It's an addiction of sorts. Many of them repeat it for so long they actually believe it whole-heartedly. In the political arena, feminists take pride in proclaiming their self-sufficiency to the world. Their movement spreads from Capitol building to Capitol building where they exclaim, "We are independent. We have thrown off the bondage of woman's traditional role in society. We don't need families. We don't need men. We are free." Yet, when have you ever seen a feminist standing by herself, rooting for herself, without her cohorts? They are all dependent upon each other. The fact is, humans were created for dependency. You can deny it if you like, but you can't change the truth. I guess the issue really comes down to on whom, or what, are you dependent?
